Towson University President Robert L. Caret was standing in the middle of a sunny atrium in the school's virtual online campus, holding forth on student life, when he was attacked. An avatar - or online representation of a person - in a blue dress walked right into him.
"An avatar just attacked me, I think," Caret said, laughing. "I'm hoping it was unintentional."
Caret holds monthly "study breaks," where he meets with students to answer questions and hear their concerns. Last week, for the first time, he met with students in the virtual world of Second Life - an online program populated by its own world of animated people and places. Towson University has built an "island" in Second Life, and that's where Caret met with more than 30 students and faculty.

But not so much on Internet: survey

When students disparaged and defamed Montreal-area teachers on the Internet two years ago, the incidents rattled and incensed many teachers.
It also helped prompt the Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers to launch its first survey to see how often teachers in the province's English school system are subjected to cyber-bullying and violence.

Multitasking multiplies in classrooms
By: Annie Butts
Issue date: 4/2/09 Section: Features
Multitasking is a phenomenon that has undoubtedly become a way of life for many people who are seeking more efficient ways of carrying out daily activities. With all the different technologies available to us today, we find ourselves multitasking at home, at work, in the car, and on many other occasions throughout the day. Here at Mount Holyoke, the question is whether multitasking has a place in the classroom.
Glancing around a lecture hall, it's often apparent that many other things are going on besides just listening to the professor. Passing notes to friends, working on homework for another class and doodling continue to be very common.

Web 2.0 Classrooms Versus Learning?
Arlington, Va.—There were some skeptics here this morning at The Chronicle Technology Forum, listening to a talk called “Building the Classroom of the Future: From iTunes to Twitter.” Some in the audience seemed unconvinced that tools connecting students to the Web, and to one another, would help in that future classroom.
